  • The Mediterranean diet was associated with a 23% lower risk of all-cause mortality in American women.
  • The diet’s benefits were seen for both cancer mortality and cardiovascular mortality.
  • Biological changes detected included changes in biomarkers of metabolism, inflammation, insulin resistance, and more.
  • Metabolism and inflammation biomarkers made the largest contribution to the diet’s health benefits.
  • Other biological pathways contributing to the diet’s benefits include triglyceride-ric lipoproteins, adiposity, insulin resistance, branched-chain amino acids, high-density lipoproteins, low-density lipoproteins, glycemic measures, and hypertension.
